My Long Lost Childhood in West Kenji
My name is Kenji Nakadura. I grew up in South Africa. There was a small area called West Kenji that played football or American soccer when I was young. In West Kenji there were many other ancient cultures, awed by the beauty, speed and agility of animals such as fish and birds. My brother and I considered them to be sacred. For example, the ancient Egyptians spawned certain species of fish specifically for their beauty and ornamental characteristics. Images of fish are found in frescoes in Egyptian tombs, showing them as a sacred object. Roman merchants were known to keep freshwater fish to sell as food in public fish tank aquariums.
On many bright sunny days my father would take my brother and I to the Two Oceans Aquariim in Cape Town South Africa. There we saw so many fish tank aquariums. The southern tip of the African continent is the meeting place of two mighty and bountiful oceans, the Indian and the Atlantic. The Two Oceans Aquarium on the V&A Waterfront, Cape Town is ideally positioned to showcase the incredible diversity of marine life found in these two oceans. The Aquarium is one of the top tourist attractions in Cape Town and over 3000 living sea animals, including sharks, fishes, turtles and penguins can be seen in this spectacular underwater nature reserve.
